I am going to be an 8th grader in the Fall. I am interested in just about everything, and my achievements reflect it:
I have been top 1% in CTY 2007-2010
I scored 800 SAT math in 7th grade, 2040 overall (6th grade was 1880)
My team placed second in the DOE science bowl in 6th grade (I was the backup, because I was the only 6th grader), and this pushed me to study all through summer until March this year, when the competition was held. I have always been passionate passion for science, constantly asking my dad questions, and researching online. However, my skills really dipped before the competition, and I began to forget material. When the competition came, I was not as good as I was a few months prior. I answered 90% of the questions, but we lost in the last round 132 to 134 (half of a question). I was crushed for months, and it still hurts to think about how much time I spent studying, only to loose. A week or two after, I presented my biology project at the Synopsis Science Fair. I am the youngest in my family, with a very strong legacy of success. My to be 10th grade brother has won 4 years in a row, my sister won the year she participated in, then won $10,000 or $20,000 with that project at a different fair. Last year, I won a biology summer camp, but this year I didn't win anything. I had spent hour and hours, sometimes up until midnight, or even 2:00 am or more, and when I needed to build my board, sleep was a luxury. It seemed that my project was far better than many that won, one was a half board about which charger charged an iPod the fastest. Mine was a double board (6 feet high), my binder had hundreds of photos, and all the handwritten notes would amount to Euclid's Elements. This really hurt my spirits, and I couldn't even look at science for months. I felt like I had no motivation. At some point, I realized that every minute spent studying was worth it. I had learned a lot, had fun, and fueled my passion for science. (мальчика явно учили как писать "правильные эссе!")
In 7th grade on the AMC 8 I got top 5% in the nation, tied for 4th place in my school's Mathcounts team with 25/30 sprint and 7/8 or 8/8 target (they lost one of my sheets). I did well at chapters, beat one of the people on the team, and tied another. I participated in the Purple Math Comet, and got honorable mention in Middle School Large.
At school, I was on student cabinet, made a programming club with about 30 members. (I taught them HTML, CSS, and a little JavaScript over a few months, and held a website design competition.) I made a math circle club, but that only had 9 members because it was at the end of the school year. I have had a 4.0 gpa all of middle school so far, except 1st trimester 6th grade PE I got an A-.
I have been programming since elementary school, and about month ago I went to a mobile hackathon. I won $600 from appMobi, an Atrix 4g, round trip and hotel for my dad, brother, and me to Las Vegas, where I get to present at the AT&T developer summit, and go to the first day of CES 2012. I am likely to get an internship with appMobi. I am currently working on a startup (http://thebundlebot.com/). (И это правда, спустя два года у него на линкедин статус сменился на стажера в другой компании делающей мобильное приложение).
I play 3 instruments (cello, violin, and piano), did cross country in 6th grade, shotput and discuss in 6th and 7th (shotput I was 2nd and discuss I was 1st in school last year).
My problem now is that I am doing too much. I am taking 3 online math courses over the summer, along with all of this. I think I am too well rounded, and this isn't the Renaissance. I don't know what my specific interests are, and I do not cannot keep this up, plus sports and homework, when school starts, and maintain a 4.0 GPA. I am studying or working all day long, and still feel like there is a lot more I can do. I feel like I need to choose what to do, even though I like it all.
Thank you for the wonderful post.
