Dear Mr. President,
Dear Mr. Powell,
Dear Ms. Rice, November 29, 2004
In 1991, after 300 years of Russian and Soviet domination, the Ukrainian people, in a firm and democratic voice, voted for independence. This act effectively ended the Soviet Union. Today, Russia, never content with losing their domination over Ukraine, is attempting to regain its control and influence over the Ukrainian people. Despite hundreds of millions of Russian dollars, untoward intrusion, manipulation, and pressure to accept Moscow’s favored candidate, the Ukrainian people have voted for freedom and democracy. Now, faced with defeat, Moscow is further interfering in Ukraine, promoting separatist movements in eastern areas of Ukraine.
These actions, in violation of every international norm and standard, must end!
We, Ukrainian citizens living in the United States, ask for your help in defending Ukraine’s democracy. We call on you to exercise your firm position towards democracy and for free and fair elections in Ukraine. The situation is Ukraine is still very tense. Millions of Ukrainian people in the country and abroad remain on the streets expressing their disgust with the actions of a Ukrainian government that falsified elections and continuing Russian interference. Since proclaiming independence 13 years ago, the Ukrainian people have had to endure rule by an autocratic and corrupt government, were deprived of many human rights and forced to live in poverty in a country with deep corruption. The current government continues to deprive the people of their right to vote and to live in a united and peaceful country. In the media, Channel 5, Era, and other democratic TV and press sources, which broadcast the true situation in Ukraine, have been shut out of eastern and southern parts of the country. Government manipulation continues!
As you know, during last couple of days, demonstrations in southern and eastern Ukraine have been led by Prime-Minister and erstwhile Presidential candidate Viktor Yanukovych and the Mayor of Moscow Yuriy Luzhkov, who is well known for his separatist calls to reunite Ukrainian Crimea to Russia. At these meetings, they advocate autonomy for these regions. Splitting the country is the worst thing that can happen. This idea does not come from the people, but rather from the current government, from corrupt mayors of southern and eastern regions where the most election fraud was committed, and, most of all, from those politicians in Russia who have never been happy with an independent Ukraine.
We request that you use all political and legal means to convince Mr. Putin and other Russian politicians not to interfere in Ukrainian politics and not to play a hypocritical role in Ukraine. President Putin has been complaining about Western influence in Ukraine while Russia continues to play its dirty games. For President Kuchma, we ask you to declare his separatist threats as unconstitutional in Ukraine and against all international, legal and moral standards.

"who is well known for his separatist calls to reunite Ukrainian Crimea to Russia"

Date: 2004-11-29 10:02 am (UTC)

Date: 2004-11-29 10:30 am (UTC)-

Date: 2004-11-29 11:46 am (UTC)

Date: 2004-12-06 08:27 am (UTC)
