My son is in 8th grade now in magnet school and it's true - kids like that boy are very common.
My boy is gifted, but not a genious, he is smart, but was not trained from tender age on taking math olympics and so on, like his school friends - taking Algebra 2 in 6 grade (8 grade subject) and getting 96 in it, he was only in 50% score in his class.
And all those kids will compete against each others for college admission. NCSU (not Stanford), that 10 years ago would take any decent student, has crazy competition and it's not funny.
We applied to Charter school for him, in orientation we've been told - "Don't keep your hopes up, your chance of getting in is less than 1%"...
