We were actually more concerned about the second cat since our first was older and finicky. In fact, she went from being (most recently) one of three cats in the house to only herself, and we were concerned that she was lonely. So we wanted a domestic shorthair for the shedding issues, about 6 months old - young enough to adjust well but old enough to defend herself. As it turns out, she hated having a new friend and as soon as we got her, I unexpectedly started working from home anyway. And the younger one is much more dominant, even though I think both were initially feral. I guess my point is that you never know, but it's always nice to save a cat from death.
